Sep 2, 2007 · Sportsman 48 Will Not Cycle. Hello! I'm working on a 1953 vintage Remington Sportsman 48, 12 gauge that fires, but does not cycle. The barrel does retract into the receiver, but the bolt appears to reach a high-friction point about two-thirds of the way through its travel. I've cleaned and lightly lubed the recoil spring and friction rings. Remington Sportsman 48 issue. I just purchased a clean, working 48, and it's recoil-actuated. I removed the barrel and forearm to clean it, after getting it home. While I was wiping down the receiver, I heard a "click", and then noticed that there is an "arm" flopping up and down behind the bolt. and I assume that something came loose.

Recall seeing a detailed chart covering several setups for Sportsman 48 and 11-48 versions. It depends on serial number of the individual model of gun. Perhaps some one has seen this as well.That should definitely loosen things up. As far as removing the pin, yes after it’s driven down, you should be able to remove the firing pin. Mine was to long and bottoming out on the slide before it cleared the bolt.
